Day Trip from Lisbon to Sintra: A Local Driver's Guide

Everything you need to know: best time to go, what to see, how to avoid the crowds, and the best way to get there.

Day Trip from Lisbon to Sintra: A Local Driver's Guide

Sintra is the most popular day trip from Lisbon, and for good reason. The town combines fantastical palaces, lush gardens, and a mountain with its own microclimate just 30 kilometres from the capital. But there are logistical details that can make the difference between an unforgettable day and several hours lost to queues and full car parks.

As local drivers, we run this route several times a week. Here is what we have learned.

When to go

The best-kept secret: arrive in Sintra village before 9:30 AM. Pena Palace opens at 9:30, and typical tour buses arrive around 10-10:30. If you enter Pena at 9:30, you will have the first 30 minutes almost alone.

From May to September, weekends and holidays, the town fills up significantly after 11 AM. We recommend leaving Lisbon as early as possible or, alternatively, visiting from 4 PM onwards (with crowds already leaving).

What to see, in order of priority

  • Pena National Palace - The colourful icon at the top of the mountain. The gardens (Parque da Pena) are almost as impressive as the palace. Allow 2 hours.
  • Quinta da Regaleira - Famous for the "Initiation Well", an inverted tower with a spiral staircase. Great for photos. 1h30-2h.
  • Moorish Castle - Moorish walls with panoramic views over the entire region. 1h.
  • Cabo da Roca - 25 minutes from Sintra, the westernmost point of continental Europe. Strong winds, dramatic landscape.
  • Sintra historic centre - The famous travesseiros at Casa Piriquita, the Sintra National Palace (in the village centre, with the conical chimneys), and small shops.

How to get there: options compared

Train (CP): departs Rossio (Lisbon) to Sintra in ~40 minutes. Economical but packed in high season, and you still need local buses to get up to the palaces. Multi-hour queues for the 434 bus are common in summer.

Own car: 30-40 minutes via A5/A37. The problem: parking. Lots near Pena and Regaleira fill up early. In high season you may spend 30+ minutes just finding a spot.

Private driver: leave whenever you choose, drop-off at each monument's gate, driver waits while you visit. No packed trains, no parking dramas. This is what we recommend for families, couples wanting to make the most of the day, or anyone short on time. See our Sintra transfer page.

Tickets: what to buy and where

Buy tickets online in advance, especially Pena. The physical box office has long queues in high season. The official site is parquesdesintra.pt. For Pena there is a palace + park ticket (~€14) or park-only (~€7). Quinta da Regaleira sells a single ticket (~€12).

Where to eat

In Sintra village: Tascantiga or Casa Piriquita (the latter for the famous travesseiros). For a more formal meal, Sintra Boutique Hotel or Lawrence's Hotel (the oldest hotel in the Iberian Peninsula).

If combining with Cascais in the afternoon, eat light in Sintra and dine in Cascais by the sea (Mar do Inferno or Casa da Guia).

Recommended full-day itinerary

  1. 8:30 AM - Departure from Lisbon
  2. 9:30 AM - Arrival in Sintra, Pena Palace (entry at 9:30 - minimal queues)
  3. 11:30 AM - Quinta da Regaleira
  4. 1:00 PM - Lunch in the village
  5. 2:30 PM - Moorish Castle OR historic centre (shopping, coffee)
  6. 4:00 PM - Cabo da Roca (ocean view, photos)
  7. 5:00 PM - Cascais (coffee by the sea, marina walk)
  8. 7:00 PM - Return to Lisbon

If you prefer a more relaxed day, skip one of the monuments (usually Moorish Castle) and spend more time in the village or at Cabo da Roca.

Conclusion

Sintra rewards those who plan. Arrive early, buy tickets online, and consider private transport if you value time over savings. For a couple or family, the private transfer often costs less than 4 train tickets + taxis + cafés wasted looking for parking.
