Lisbon Airport Transfer: 7 Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Learn from the mistakes we see most often - from picking the wrong taxi to underestimating A5 traffic.

Lisbon Airport Transfer: 7 Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) is 15-25 minutes from central Lisbon. Sounds simple - but we see the same mistakes repeat themselves week after week. Here is what we have learned from over a decade operating airport transfers.

1. Underestimating A5 rush-hour traffic

Between 7-10 AM and 5-8 PM on weekdays, the Cascais-Airport route can take 25-30 minutes longer than normal. For flights before 9 AM, we recommend leaving Cascais at 5:45-6:00 AM. For 7 AM flights leaving from the centre, leave at 5:30. Always. No exceptions.

2. Trusting the airport taxi queue

Taxis in the airport exterior queue are licensed, but the price varies by time of day, day of week, and luggage (extra fees). We have seen clients pay €35 to the centre at a normal time, and €60 for the same trip on a Sunday evening. For fixed price and predictability, book a private transfer in advance.

3. Not requesting a child seat at booking

Portuguese law requires a child seat for children up to 12 years OR 135 cm in height. Taxis typically do not have them. Booking a private transfer and requesting a seat (free) at booking solves the problem. Mention the child's age and weight - we provide child seats (9 months to 4 years) and boosters (4-10 years), with 3-point safety harness. We do not carry infant carriers (egg type), so if you are travelling with a very small baby, let us know so we can agree the best solution.

4. Forgetting the flight number

For any professional transfer booking, give the flight number, not just the expected arrival time. It lets us monitor delays in real time and adjust the pickup. Without the flight number, if the plane is 2 hours late, the driver may leave thinking you did not arrive.

5. Accepting "price to be agreed"

Any serious provider gives you a fixed price in writing before booking. If you hear "depends, we'll see on the day" or "do not worry, it's normal" - be suspicious. In Lisbon, an airport-centre transfer in a sedan is around €25-40, minivan €35-60, minibus from €70. Values well above or below deserve a second opinion.

6. Booking last-minute in high season

Between May and September, and during events like Web Summit or the Champions League, demand is high. On specific days, every premium vehicle in Lisbon is booked. To secure availability, book 48h-1 week in advance. For large groups or weddings, 4-6 weeks.

7. Not confirming the meeting point

Lisbon Airport has 2 terminals and several arrival zones. The driver should tell you EXACTLY where they wait (e.g. "Terminal 1, international arrivals exit, near column H, with Cores d'Aventura sign"). If communication is vague, you will waste time searching.

Bonus: what to do if your transfer does not show up

Even with the best company, delays happen (unforeseen traffic). Always have the driver's direct phone number (not just the office). For Cores d'Aventura it is (+351) 915 377 711 - direct, 24 hours.

Conclusion

Most of these mistakes have the same remedy: simple planning and choosing a provider that gives fixed price, monitored flight number, included child seat, and direct driver contact. Ready to plan your transfer? Request a quote here, we reply within 48 hours.
